Twenty healthy subjects were fitted with both Breathe Right® nasal strips and placebo strips. They were then tested for airflow through their noses; i.e., nasal resistance. After this test they were treated with a pharmaceutical nasal decongestant and tested again.
The Breathe Right nasal strips improved their nasal airflow; i.e., nasal resistance, by 21 percent during inhalation and by 23 percent during exhalation. The pharmaceutical decongestant improved their nasal breathing by an additional 50 percent.
This study demonstrated that the Breathe Right nasal strip opens up the nasal passage and stabilizes the soft tissues that make up the side of the nose. It also showed that the effect of the Breathe Right nasal strip is separate from and can add to the effects of a pharmaceutical decongestant.
