Physiologic Effects of An External Nasal Dilator
Griffin JW, Hunter G, Ferguson D, Sillers MJ
Laryngoscope
1997

Fifty-three athletes participated in the first part of this study where the dilation effects of the Breathe Right® nasal strip were evaluated. These athletes showed an average 24 percent increase in the internal cross sectional area of the nose, specifically in the nasal valve region.

Thirty of these athletes then exercised on stationary bicycles both with the Breathe Right nasal strip and with a placebo strip. During the 15-minute exercise period, three areas of improvement with the Breathe Right nasal strip were observed:

  • Less energy was used (as measured by oxygen consumption)
  • The heart rate was lower
  • The perceived exertion was less

This study shows that the Breathe Right nasal strips can help an athlete do the same amount of exercise using less energy.
